The town is named after the Otjiherero word for "little hills".
A small ranching town, it is the beginnings of Damaraland.
The town is home to a large population of white Namibians owning a large majority of the businesses as well as the farms surrounding Outjo.
The majority of the black population is Damara.

Outjo, however, is also home to Owambo, Himba and San communities living in the town's eastern location.

It is 65 km north of Otjiwarongo and 115 km to Okaukuejo at Etosha National Park, making it the park's "gateway" town.

The area has long been Herero territory.
The first European settlers came to the area in the 1880s, followed by the German Schutztruppe who established a military outpost in 1897.

The town continued to grow until the war between the Germans and the Herero began in 1904.
Over the next century the town grew little, until post Independence allowed Namibians to freely relocate to new areas.

Today, Outjo is experiencing another growth as businesses are sprouting to support the burgeoning tourism surrounding Etosha and Twyfelfontein.

The town Museum, on the top of the hill on Frikkie P. Marais Street, is a beautiful stone mason building, and offers little snippets of the town's history.
There are also animal horns, skins, and mineral and gems on display.
If you have nothing better to do, it's a way to kill an hour.

AFRIKANER FESTIVAL

Every other month or so, the white Afrikaner population holds a festival, full of music, beer and meat.
The dates are uncertain, and the best bet is to either ask around, or check the OK Foods for postings.
The festival will be an insightful look at how the other side of the population lives and celebrates.

Outjo has a number of small takeaways, the OK Foods supermarket and a number of small cafés serving light meals.
Also, the game lodges around town hve restaurants serving the standard three meals a day.

OUTJO BACKEREI

This is the town's best German bakery with glazed pastries, muffins and cakes with thick frosting.

There is also a restaurant with an extensive menu serving simple omelets to huge breakfasts fit for a farmer.
For lunch, they have cheap hamburgers, schnitzels and fish, as well as sandwiches and pizza.
This place can easily cater to vegetarian.
