Otjiwarongo, a Herero word meaning "a good place", is a significant center for cattle ranching even today.
The town grew from the train station en route to Swakopmund from Tsumeb.
Today, is in a prime location for both the railway and road network, and is conveniently located near some of Namibia's most popular destinations.

Only 250 km north of Windhoek, on a slope of undulating plains, the town is for most a simple stop en route to their preferred destination.
The B1 road acts as Hage Geingob street which runs directly through the center of town.

The town's filling stations, restaurants, supermarkets and accomodation are near the center of town, and are either on or around Hage Geingob Street.
The town itself offers little excitement and is known more for the area that surrounds it.

The Otjiwarongo Crocodile Ranch breeds Nile Crocodiles for their skin to be made into fancy handbags, wallets, shoes or belts for high-end markets in Europe and North America.

Locomotive No.41 is on display outside the railway station and was built in Germany by the Henshel Company in 1912. 
It was brought here from Kassel to transport ore between Tsumeb and Swakopmund.

People find the area surrounding Otjiwarongo full of opportunities to explore the different activities, including working with Namibia's big cat populations or rhino tracking through the bus of the Waterberg Plateau.

Only 60 km from Otjiwarongo on the D2414 road, in the small settlement of Kalkfeld - near the farm Otjihenamaparero, the sign is well posted - exist rare dinosaur footprints dating from 150-200 million years ago.
There is camping available with water and toilets near the site.
