Epupa Falls

The Epupa Falls are created by the Kunene River on the border of Angola and Namibia, in the Kaokoland area of the Kunene Region.

The name "Epupa" is a Herero word for "foam", in reference to the foam created by the falling water.

Despite being difficult to reach (a 4X4 vehicle is needed to reach them from Opuwo), the falls are a major visitor attraction in Namibia, because of the largely unspoiled environment, with fig trees, baobabs, makalani palms and colored rock walls framing the falls.

The Epupa Constituency is named for the falls.

Kalahari Desert

Questa foto di Kalahari Anib Lodge è offerta da TripAdvisor.

The Kalahari Desert is perhaps Namibia's best known geographical feature.
Shared with South Africa and Botswana, it has a variety of localized environments ranging from hyper-arid sandy desert, to areas that seem to defy the common definition of desert.
One of this areas, known as the Succulent Karoo, is home to over 5,000 species of plants, nearly half of them endemic; fully one third of the world's succulents are found in the Karoo.

Foto di Kalahari Anib Lodge, Mariental
Questa foto di Kalahari Anib Lodge è offerta da TripAdvisor.

The reason behind this high productivity and endemism may be the relatively stable nature of precipitation.

Foto di Kalahari Anib Lodge, Mariental
The Karoo apparently does not experience drought on a regular basis, so even though the area is technically desert, regular winter rains provide enough moisture to support the region's interesting plant community.

Another feature of the Kalahari, indeed many parts of Namibia, are inselbergs, isolated mountains that create microclimates and habitat for organism not adapted to life in the surrounding desert matrix.

Hippopotamus in Greek means "River Horse".

It is the largest of freshwater mammals.

Susceptible to heat and sunburn, it will spend long lazy day submerged in water, with only eyes, ears and nostrils peeking out.

At night the Hippo will leave the water to forage on land.

They have a weight of up to 3,000 kg. and a lifespan of about 40 years.

Ferocious hunters, Crocodiles can live up to 100 years.

They are opportunistic predators, and will attack even very large animals and humans that may venture too close to their river or water-pan homes.

Capable of attaining six metres, they possess a long tail which is effectively used to propel them rapidly from water .... onto their unsuspecting prey.

The Sperrgebiet, meaning "Prohibited Area", also known as Diamond Area 1, is a diamond mining area in south-western Namibia, in The Namib Desert.

It spans the Atlantic Ocean-facing coast from Oranjemund on the border with South Africa, to around 45 miles north of Luderitz, a distance of 200 miles north.

The Sperrgebiet extends to around 100 kilometers inland, and its total area of 10,400 square miles, makes up three percent of Namibia's land mass.

However, mining only takes place in five percent of the Sperrgebiet, with most of the area acting as a buffer zone.

Members of the public are banned from entering most of the area, despite the creation of a National Park in 2004.

Otjiwarongo

" A place where the grazing is good and the cattle grow fat " (Herero Language)

Otjiwarongo was established in 1892, and is considered one of the oldest towns in the country.

The word “Otjiwarongo” is derived from the Herero language meaning the beautiful place with the inference that cattle could get fat grazing in this area.
The name is appropriate as Otjiwarongo is home to some of the biggest cattle-breeding companies in Namibia.

German Namibians first settled in Otjiwarongo in 1900.
The area also became the theatre for the final battle of the  Herero Uprising of 1904 against the German forces.

Namibia has a little of everything and more than its fair share of the unusual. Even in Kalkfield, an out of the way place on the railway line north, there is a cluster of small, shallow rock depressions that are footprints from another world.
These dinosaur footprints, on a farm near Kalkfield, are judged to be between 150 and 185 million years old and have been declared a national monument.
The nearest best accomodation is Mt. Etjio Safari Lodge.

Omaruru

Omaruru is situated near the Erongo Mountains, on the usually dry Erongo River.

The name, in the local herero language, means "bitter milk" as the cattle used to browse on a local bush that turned their milk bitter.

The town is known for its annual festival where the Hereros commemorate their past local chiefs, its winery and for the dinosaur footprints at nearby Otjienamaparero.

If you are planning a trip to Omaruru in the month of September you should time it to coincide with the Annual Artist Trail which is usually held in the first week of the month having exhibits including musicians, sculpors, photography and many more.

Welcome to GocheGanas !!

Situated a mere 29 kilometres south east from Windhoek on a hilltop overlooking a spectacular landscape, GOCHEGANAS is a luxury lodge offering a unique combination of Wildlife, Nature and Wellness experiences.

"GOCHEGANAS" - a descriptive Damara name, meaning: "Place of Camel Thorns, abounding with Candle-Pod Acacias" is more than just a place, it is an experience….

GocheGanas offers 16 luxurious chalets, under thatched roof, with uninterrupted views over the Nature Reserve. All rooms are equipped with en suite bathrooms, air conditioning, mini bars, TV and DVD/CD players.

Game abound on the GocheGanas Nature Reserve, with 25 different large game species totalling approximately 1,600 animals roaming across the reserve. Our early morning and late afternoon game drives remain a highlight for many of  visitors.

With 25 different wildlife species on the 6000 hectares at GocheGanas, our game drives remain a very popular activity. Game drives are undertaken early morning and late afternoon and includes a stop halfway where we serve snacks and drinks to guests. The qualified guide assists with sharing information on fauna, flora and interesting bird species.
With the abundance of game on the farm, every game drive has its highlights, especially when guests are lucky enough to view the rhino family!

Other game on GocheGanas include steenbok, duiker, klipspringer, red hartebeest, wildebeest (blue), eland, Burchell's zebra (Protected and conserved mammals in Namibia), springbok, oryx (gemsbok), kudu, giraffe, waterbuck, warthog, Hartmann's mountain zebra (Endemic, one of Namibia's conserved mammals), square-lipped (white) rhinoceros (Second largest land mammal), cheetah, leopard, caracal, striped polecat (Zorilla), and black wildebeest.

Amongst the small species you can spot small-spotted genet, honey badger, african wild cat, cape fox, bat-eared fox, black-backed jackal, aardwolf, aardvark (antbear), pandolin (scaly anteater) (Protected), yellow mongoose, banded mongoose, suricate (meerkat), ground squirrel, scrub hare, springhare, rock dassie, porcupine, bushbaby (lesser night ape) and chacma baboon.

During December 2002, the owners of GocheGanas Nature Reserve made an exciting discovery of ancient stone age caverns, located a few kilometres from the Lodge. Stone tools and a variety of pottery shards were found, and it has been confirmed that the pieces are between 2000 and 9000 years old.

More and more caverns are constantly being discovered, and it would appear that the natural hot water spring on GocheGanas could have been the reason for stone age humans to settle down here. The possibility also exists that rock engravings or paintings may be found on GocheGanas. Due care is taken to not damage this sensitive area, and for this reason, guided visits to the Stone Age Caverns are offered by GocheGanas.

A visit to the Stone Age Caverns lasts about 2 and a half hours, and includes a drive to the site, and thereafter a short walk to the Caverns. On the way back to the Lodge, they stop for sundowner drinks and snacks.

They also offer guided walks in the vicinity of the Lodge. Given the number of water holes around the Lodge, this remains a popular activity.

Wellness is a holistic approach to health that combines all aspects of physical, mental and spiritual well-being to realign mind, body and soul. It is a place where the noise of our busy lives is drowned out by the whispers of tranquillity - a place where we can draw upon the strength of a healthy body.

Guests are also welcome to undertake unguided walks around the Lodge.

GocheGanas has an interesting background - to the beginning of this century.
The farm "GocheGanas" is first mentioned in the archives in 1903. In April 1913 the farm was sold for 210 000 Mark, and included the sale of 175 ostriches. The deed of sale specifies that the new owners, Stoermer and Denk had the obligation to farm the land and not to resell it without approval of the "Kaiserliche Gouvernement".

Failure to comply with these conditions, would result in a fine of  10 000 Mark.
That same year, Mr. CG Mertens forwarded a letter to the "Gouvernement" stating his intention buy GocheGanas to breed horses, which he could not do on his farm in the Okahandja district due to the risk of horse sickness.
He bought GocheGanas for the amount of 277 000 Mark.
During 1928 to 1936 a cheese factory was established, producing Gouda cheese.
Many years later, Mr. I Bonadei bought the farm from Mr Mertens, marketing the milk under the name of Bonmilk.
In 1997 the widow of Mr. Bonadei sold half of the farm to the Ohlthaver and List Group.
The other half of the farm was sold to Mr. Udo M Stritter, who together with his son Ingo, converted this land into a game reserve. Luxurious chalets and a Wellness Village with state of the art equipment have been added, and is known today as "GocheGanas".

GocheGanas is situated in central Namibia, a mere 29 km south-east of Windhoek. Take the B1 out of Windhoek, after 20 km turn left on the gravel road D1463 for 9 km and turn right through the GOCHEGANAS entrance gate.
After passing through our imposing gate, you will travel another 5 km along a winding road, leading you to the Lodge.

Wide Open Spaces - totally unpolluted, crisp & clear.
• 30 Minutes from Windhoek and the Domestic Airport.
• 45 Minutes from the International Airport.

Cheetahs !

The Cheetah is the fastest of all mammals.
Giving chase it can attain speeds of between 95 and 112 kilometers an hour for distances of up to about 300 metres !

A machine-like blur at speed, this gangly yet graceful creature is a lesson in streamlining with small head, deep chest and long legs.

A long heavy tail serves as a balancing aid used to great advantage during the chase.

Unlike the other big cats, the cheetah hunts mostly during the day and in open spaces, where it is able to make full use of its athletic prowess to catch small antelope, hares, warthogs and ground birds.
It seldom scavenges as it prefers fresh meat.

Cheetah are sometimes confused with leopard because of the spots which characterize both animals. Arrangement of the spot is more random in cheetahs and their heads are smaller.

Distinctive black lines run down the cheek bones from the eyes, and the cubs have a characterist tuft of hair from the nape to the rump.
This tuft of hair is even more pronounced on the young. Up to the age of about three months, cubs have a mantle of smoky grey hair concealing the spots that will appear later.
This serves as a camouflage device which offers some protection to the customary litters of two or three cubs, which are vulnerable to predation.

Rhinos !!

Foto di Namibia
Questa foto di Namibia è offerta da TripAdvisor.

The white rhino is a grazer whilst the black variety is a "browser".
Though they don't have incisor teeth, the bulkier white rhino uses its touch-sensitive moveable upper lip to crop grass to within a centimetre of the ground, whilst the black rhino is able to feel for the leaves amongst the tree branches.
The elongated upper lip browsing black rhino needs a good supply of trees and shrubs, and is dependent on surface water for drinking, and wallowing which helps to keep it cool and also rid itself of parasites.

The black variety in particular is very temperamental in character and great care has to be taken when walking a trail in its domain.
All Rhino should be treated with great respect for when threatened they can be really dangerous.

Despite their bulk, rhino are agile creatures and can change direction quickly, even when charging at fifty kilometres an hour.

Living in large family groups, usually consisting of a stallion and a harem of females, zebra are often seen in the company of herds of other animal species.

They are timid creatures and are continuously anxious about the possible presence of lion.

Their camouflage is designed to make them difficult to discern whilst in dappled forest shadow.

Giraffes !

Foto di Parco nazionale di Etosha
Questa foto di Parco nazionale di Etosha è offerta da TripAdvisor.

Giraffes are the tallest of all land animals standing up to a giant five and a half metres, with long necks accounting for nearly half of this height.

So tall are they, that nature has had to provide a special reservoir of blood in their brain, so that when lifting its head there is enough blood in reserve to prevent it from fainting !

Foto di Parco nazionale di Etosha

Questa foto di Parco nazionale di Etosha è offerta da TripAdvisor.

Found only in Africa, south of the Sahara Desert, Giraffe fill a niche in the animal kingdom which no other creature can emulate.

Their enormous height allows them to browse feed from the tops of trees which only they can reach.

Giraffe are gregarious by nature, and are often seen grazing amongst zebra and antelope.

It might be surprising to learn that the giraffe has no more vertebrae in its neck than many of these animals, only seven, the same as the squat-necked hippo !

Foto di Parco nazionale di Etosha
Questa foto di Parco nazionale di Etosha è offerta da TripAdvisor.

Apart from stamina, the ability to run at a reasonable speed, and his strong kick, the usually docile giraffe has little means of defence against predators.

During the mating season, young bulls may batter each other, using the two to four small skin-covered horn-like structures on their heads to head-butt their rivals.

Calves are born after a gestation of 15 months, and can soon loping along inelegantly beside their peers.

They will already be two metres tall at this stage and the mother will ensure her youngster is kept clean by putting her long rough tongue to good use.

Elephants !

Congregated at the waterhole, playfully splashing and spouting plumes of water over their wrinkly hides to cool their bodies, or whilst flapping their ears like huge fans as they amble along browsing for food, the majestic African Elephant may seem to have not an enemy in the world.

Foto di Parco nazionale di Etosha
Questa foto di Parco nazionale di Etosha è offerta da TripAdvisor.

All males have tusks, as do most females.
Even at birth, calves have a tiny pair of "milk tusks". At about a year, these are replaced with a permanent pair which continue to grow throughout the animal's life.
Large elephants can attain a mass of about five tons with tusks up three metres in lenght.
They consume huge amounts of food in the form of grass and leaves - often selected from the tops of trees - and depending on availability can digest up to 200 kilograms in a day.
The elephant lacks sweat glands and if it were not for its large ears which constitute about 20 percent of its body surface area it would not be able to cope with the intense heat of the African sun.
The ears are richly supplied with blood vessels and are the ideal avenue for heat loss.
Flapping the ears dissipates body heat, as well as producing a cooling breeze over the skin.
This gentle flapping action has the effect of cooling five to twelve litres of blood flowing through the ears every minute.

Foto di Parco nazionale di Etosha
Questa foto di Parco nazionale di Etosha è offerta da TripAdvisor.

Other methods of keeping cool include spraying the body with water and drinking approximately 150 litres a day, climatic conditions permitting.
In the dry season, elephants may have to travel up to 80 kilometres a day in search of water, which is sucked into the trunk, and then squirted into the mouth.

Highly destructive in their feeding habits, elephant bulls will push down whole trees to reach a few leaves, and will strip the bark from certain species, particularly acacias, sometimes damaging them beyond regeneration.

Male elephants occasionally indulge in serious fighting over a female. Living in a matriarchal society, the females and their young associate in closely-knit groups, combining with other family groups to form the breeding herd.

Foto di Parco nazionale di Etosha
Questa foto di Parco nazionale di Etosha è offerta da TripAdvisor.

A single calf may be born at any time of the year following a 22 month period of gestation and its lifespan will average about 60 years.

These extremely intelligent animals are endowed with a conscious sense of family unit.

The mother, especially, will show great affection for her young, and when danger is imminent  the calf will be hidden under her belly.

Elephants have only man as their enemy, since even the lion will only attack a small calf if it has strayed too far from the herd.
