The Nama word Tsoakhaub, meaning "an excrement opening", referred to the waters of the Swakop River when it flooded, carrying mud, sand, pieces of vegetation and animal corpses into the Atlantic Ocean, and was the first known name given to the area of what is today Swakopmund.

The Nama name was changed to "Swachaub" with the arrival of German settlers and with the official proclamation of Swakopmund as an independent district of German South West Africa in 1896.

Speaking about Herero's culture .....

Foto di Kamanjab
Questa foto di Kamanjab è offerta da TripAdvisor.

Because the men were responsible for the cattle, the Herero adopted a system of patriarcal descent, which traced a person's ancestors through their father's family.

At the same time they kept the system of matrilineal descent, which traced a person's ancestors back through the mother's family.

So they developed a double clan descent system.

Other Bantu groups such as the Owambo continue to use the matrilineal system.

In 1856, the Rhenish Mission Society first established its station here.
Eventually, in short time, it was destroyed and abandoned by 1880.

Many Herero and Nama skirmishes took place near the area, making the region known to outsiders as "restless".

The conflict between the two clans led many Europeans to hesitantly settle here.
The German colonial administration attempted to bring peace to the area with "protection agreements" with the Herero in 1895, but no considerable change actually occured.

Northern Damaraland

North of the Huab River the government has set aside land specifically for tourism as a measure to limit development and keep the area in its natural state.
These open lands are commonly known as concession areas and are sparsely developed with only few locals and their livestock roaming the lands.

The area is diverse, from rolling mountains to bush covered hills and the flat savannas, each home to a variety of Namibia's vegetation, including mopane forests.

No matter what the case, the area is hypnotic.

However, the driving can be slow, difficult and cumbersome.

It is also believed the sights of the engravings were specifically chosen to meet the demands of the traditional healer, or the needs of the people, looking to something higher than themselves.

Some of the engravings are in cracks or fissures, possibly acting as doorways to the supernatural world, while others may be strategically placed to guide energy from the supernatural for guiding an upcoming journey.

It is also thought that the engravings were created during the dry season when there was a shortage of water and people were drawn to the natural springs flowing in the area.
The truth is no one really knows why they were created, making this place so enigmatic.

The engravings are mostly of what the people knew, including animals and geometric designs.

Human pictures are rarely depicted , yet are evident.
It is thought the animals and the way are depicted along with the geometric designs, are images seen through the eyes of traditional healers.

Traditionally, the San believe that when a traditional healer is at work, he enters a trance, in the spiritual world.

The traditional healer then takes the form of a supernatural creature, usually familiar animals like elephant, giraffe or lion.

These animals were thought to have special powers for healing the sick or could bring rain.

Thus the engravings of animals are thought to have these purposes, rather than just art of animals in the area.
