Omaruru's beginnings date back to 1872, with the arrival of a mission built by Gottlieb Viehe.
In 1904 the mission was attacked during the warring battles between the Germans nd Herero.
Afterwards, a tower was erected to commemorate Hauptmann Franke's troops, who relieved the local garrison's men who were stretched thin by the Herero when they had taken arms against the German colonial presence.
