Coastal Region

The coast is one of the most diversified, contrasting regions in all of Namibia.

The Erongo and Naukluft mountains tower over the rolling desert savannas, while the Namib Desert seems to appear out of nowhere.

Together they create the Namib-Naukluft, one of Africa's largest National Parks.

It is here you can trek through a multitude of environments amongst the wild animals that roam this desolate land, explore the romantic red sand dunes of Sossusvlei and kayak with thousands of seals at the Walvis Bay Lagoon.

Walvis Bay is an industrious town and boasts southern Africa's deepest port.
A large number of goods arrive in Walvis Bay, before being quickly loaded onto semi tracks and taken into Namibia, Botswana, the Congo, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

During the months of December and January the region quickly becomes a playground for Namibians, South Africans and Western visitors.

The coast simply has it all........

In 1845 the missionary Heinrich Kleinschmidt of the German Rhenish Missionary Society gave the area its new name of Rehoboth.

By 1864, the Nama abandoned the area due to war.

The Basters arrived in 1870 and were granted permission to settle in Rehoboth by the peace conference of Okahandja.

Today, the town is primarily inhabited by Basters commonly known as Rehoboth Basters or Rehobothers.

Rehoboth (1)

Rehoboth is the first and largest town south of Windhoek on the B1 road, just north of the Tropic of Capricorn.

Rehoboth's recent history begins with the Dutch under the leadership of Jan van Riebeeck.
At that time, the Dutch controlled the Cape of Good Hope, utilizing its location to resupply ships traveling to the East Indies.

The intermixing between Dutch men and Khoikhoi women resulted in the new peoples which eventually labeled themselves Basters in the 18th century, giving them their own identity.

By 1870, the Baster settled in the area that is now Rehoboth.

Known as Namibia's cattle country, Gobabis serves overland travelers to/from Botswana as the town is only 110 km from the border post of Buitepos.

In 1856, the Rhenish Mission Society first established its station here.
Eventually, in short time, it was destroyed and abandoned by 1880.

Many Herero and Nama skirmishes took place near the area, making the region known to outsiders as "restless".

The conflict between the two clans led many Europeans to hesitantly settle here.
The German colonial administration attempted to bring peace to the area with "protection agreements" with the Herero in 1895, but no considerable change actually occured.

Speaking about Herero's culture ...

Because the men were responsible for the cattle, the Herero adopted a system of patriarcal descent, which traced a person's ancestors through their father's family.

At the same time they kept the system of matrilineal descent, which traced a person's ancestors back through the mother's family.

So they developed a double clan descent system.

Other Bantu groups such as the Owambo continue to use the matrilineal system.

Kamanjab

The small town of Kamanjab seems to appear out of nowhere and just in the nick of time.

Nestled in a low depression around the town's surrounding hills, Kamanjab offers the basic necessities like fuel - the last stop to replenish if travelling north - a descent supermarket and small takeaways.

The town, however, offers nothing of great interest.
The C35 road has recently been tarred all the way until the junction with the C41 onwards to Opuwo, which makes travel easier and much quicker than ever before.

It is important to keep in mind that whether travelling north or south, from or to Opuwo or Ruacana, you will be crossing the red-line and land north of this veterinary control checkpoint is communal with open range livestock wondering the roadsides, foraging for food.

Stay alert to the animals and drive with care !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
